After the discovery of archeological artifacts in this area, it is known that men roamed this area dating back to the neolithic era. It´s priviledged location is probably what attracted previous civilizations, like the romans, phoenicians and arabs amongst others, to settle there.

Lagoa came to be known after the muslim expulsion in the XIII Century, the century in which the reconquest of the Algarve and it´s localities such as, Portimao, Sagres, Albufeira and Lagos occured. The Lagoa Council was formed in 1773 when this locality acquired the category of "villa", even if it was still a part of Silves.

Orographically speaking, Lagoa is located at the top of a hill surrounded by vineyards , which has made this locality a great productor of wine, and exporter to the whole country. Fishing has also made it´s mark in the economy of this city. Fish and wine have been the most important products that Lagoa has exported, and were the building blocks to it´s economy until the XX century when tourism started to become the main ingredient to it´s growing economy.
